The pottery, corning from diggings made by Dr. MănucuAdameşteanu, in Bucharest downtown, was received for study in June 2004. From three different contexts, from related locations, there are environ 60 fragments, that is quite few for a confident overview. Nevertheless, the Bucharest area is well known, making possible some comments.
One sustainable observation is the quality of the fabric. The pottery is made, in two contexts from three, without the addition of crushed potsherds, a usual practice for the area and time ( see, for instance, the settlements from Ciurel and, especially, Militari, just one mile upstream Dâmboviţa River). For the third context, the pebble sorting is also better than usual. Including here older observations about the pot shapes from Ciurel, I think we should infernot the Slavic influence, as accustomed (Teodor D. 1994), but percontra, a western influence.
The chronology suggested by some obsolete shapes, like a lid and a bolus (see Plate 1/3, 8), is around the threshold of the fifth and sixth centuries. The "Slavic" pan is for sure a local product, not a "migrated" one (Curta 2001 ). This one (1/5) is fast-wheel shaped, not encountered in Slavic areas, which excuses me from other commentaries. On the other hand, in spite of the relatively good fabric, the wheel-made pottery sums only 10% from all. I should say that the fact also shows the early phase of the so-called "Ipoteşti Cândeşti culture".
Although the distance from Dâmboviţa to Colentina River is only about 4 miles (the last is streaming Northern Bucharest), the sharp differences between the settlements along them recommend an "ethnic border" between. Dâmboviţa' s group trends to show up connectivity with Western Wallachia; Colentina's settlements group, instead, looks wild and presumably with Eastern influences.
